Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille struck two times late to take a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen years.
