Devastating Update on UPS Accident: Death Toll Climbs to 13

The number of lives lost resulting from the freight aircraft that burst into flames and crashed has climbed to 13, according to recent announcements.

City Leader's Statement

“On my way to the Workers’ memorial service, I learned of a additional fatality that passed away as a result of the UPS flight 2976 crash,” wrote the city mayor in a social media post. “My thoughts are with the families, friends and co-workers of all who were killed in this week’s tragedy. We will endure this collectively.”

Casualties Named

A release from the carrier identified the officers aboard the aircraft as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts are extended to each staff member who has been impacted and all in our local area – supporting you and ensuring you obtain the care and resources you need is our focus,” the organization’s message expressed.

Investigation Updates

Federal officials announced that the jet’s port side wing burst into flames and an engine fell off just after departure from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, causing the plane to crash and erupt into a blaze.

The safety agency has said it is investigating the aircraft’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for fixes weeks prior to the incident.

Aviation data showed the aircraft was on the ground in that location from 3 September to last week.

“We are aware that this plane was located in the facility,” said an NTSB member on Thursday, without a precise period. “We will examine all elements of service that was performed, even the San Antonio time, right up to the date of the flight.”

Retrieval of Vital Components

The audio device and flight data recorder were found, and the power plant was located on the tarmac.

The devices – referred to as black boxes – were constructed to endure collision damage and extreme fire from blazes, and they appeared to be intact when found amid the crash debris. Authorities plan on reviewing data from the black boxes.

Aircraft’s last recorded information displayed an elevation of 475 ft and a rate of 210 mph ahead of the crash.

Repair Background

Per FAA files dated last month, a fracture on a structural piece inside the center wing fuel tank demanded maintenance.

Singapore-based ST Engineering, which said it offers airframe maintenance for the company’s jet and operates a repair facility in that city, refused to speak, but said it would cooperate fully when investigators approached it.

Operations Restart

Meanwhile, UPS Worldport services resumed Wednesday night with its express also known as nighttime operation, representative Jim Mayer confirmed. Each of the three runways at the airport were also open again.

The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the organization’s biggest. The facility employs more than a large number of individuals in the region, handles numerous aircraft each day and processes in excess of four hundred thousand packages each hour.

Local Response

A memorial was conducted on the late afternoon of that date by the local labor union, which represents workers at the Louisville airport, the company’s largest shipping facility.

Teamsters Local 89, which stands for staff, began the vigil with a period of reflection at the evening hour, the estimated hour of the incident two days earlier.

“This event was so abrupt, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a chance to say goodbye to each of those who we have mourned.”
